Conversion Types
Velux/Roof Light
A popular choice Velux® are the leading manufacturer of roof windows, with over 60 years experience producing windows the name Velux® has become synonymous with this type of conversion. Velux windows are installed to fit flush with the line of the roof and as they do not require extensive alterations to the roof this option helps keep the cost of the conversion down. As the loft is not extended beyond the original roof line planning permission is not normally required.
Dormer
Increase the internal space
A dormer creates additional space and headroom in your loft conversion as it extends the space within your loft. Flat roof dormers tend to give the maximum amount of additional internal space although they do not look as attractive from outside the property. Gable fronted and hipped roof dormers look much more atractive but they often do not give as much internal space and will cost more to build due the extra complexity.
Mansard

A roof with two angles
A mansard roof has two slopes, the lower slope is as close to vertical as possible to allow the maximum amount of room inside the loft. This style of roof is named after Francois Mansart (1598-1666). This type of conversion is not often seen, in most cases where extra head room is needed a flat roof dormer is a more popular choice, although probably not as attractive as a mansard.
Hip to Gable
This is when the ridge line of a hip-end roof is extended to make it into a gable-end roof. This gives you a much larger loft area. A hip to gable extends the ridge line from the existing hips to overall the flank wall of the house. It will effectively add on the required space to enable the staircase and the shower-room to be built and also increase the standing space available in the loft.
